Saturn, Lord of Karma, in Libra

 Saturn is exalted in Libra.

The traditional view is that Saturn is a malefic, but the malefics are not as malefic as they can be when in dignity. Saturn in Libra is more likely to deliver good things.

Venus is in domicile in Libra. Venus holds Saturn, the god of time and restrictions, in high esteem: love’s ideal is lasting forever, which is a long time, and being exclusive: it has to be you and me only. No third one in our marriage please. Saturn is exalted in Libra.

Saturn  was named “The Great Malefic" by people who knew human beings don’t like to have their desires curtailed, or having to work hard, or  any of those things that are good for becoming wiser and stronger if you survive them. And it’s true, all energies go a bit too far at times, and when Saturn does, the outcome may kill you.

With a modern philosophical perspective, we may refuse to accept the idea that there might be any inherently malefic force in the cosmos though. It’s rather a question of balance.

When I was a child, I used to read “La Hulotte” - a French monthly journal for nature lovers, who took issue with the idea that some animals like foxes, weasels, martens, badgers or stoats were pests and should be eliminated at all costs. If you breed chicken, you are likely to dislike them a lot.

The campaign launched by “La Hulotte” - I had a sticker on my school bag - was showing one thousand mice thanking hunters: One fox dead? Thanks guys!

Foxes eat many more mice than chicken. They contribute to the balance of nature. Saturn may manifest as a fox and be the Great Malefic for both mice and chicken breeders, however without foxes, life would be much worse. So better protect the hen house with wire mesh and bury some length of it deeply enough. Foxes can dig.

With Saturn in Libra, we have a choice between two meanings:  the damage caused by the fox, or the hard work to set anti fox boundaries.

Mice are good for the health of grasslands and woods. You couldn’t kill all the foxes and all the mice and be rid of trouble. Every species contributes to the harmony of the ecosystem and is prevented from harmful proliferation by predators. Saturn is the limiting factor.

Without it, no equilibrium is possible. Saturn has dignity in Libra.

Generalising the principle of balance to the entire range of limitations and misfortunes that may befall us is a hard pill to swallow, yes. But if we learn to balance our energies, we can walk safely on the straight and narrow path, aka the Middle Way.

Can we dissolve karma? I believe yes. When karma is a fox, we may lose our hens, or work hard at setting a healthy boundary. We may also make an offering to the spirit of the fox and ask him to keep away. Spiritual practices throughout cultures suggest ways to balance the energies: humans make offerings to the gods, or to God, and get protection and blessings in return. Where prayer ascends, grace descends. Saturn insists on the necessity of making the effort.

What matters is keeping the scales balanced. Saturn is weight, the scales are a measuring tool. What will we put on the other pan?

  1. Great! Thanks, I can see a lot of work coming up, I'd rather not have my chicken eaten.
